F5 Networks BIG-IP DNS

BIG-IP DNS (Geographical Load Balancing)

F5 DNS Services Features:

  • BIG-IP DNS ; A DNS based module that watches the usability and performance of  global sources like distributed applications for controlling network traffic
  •  DNS caching; A DNS services feature that can response to the DNS logs which is usually requested from a memory that is held on cache in Big-IP systems. This feature can be used to reduce or change the load on other DNS servers.
  •  DNS Express ; A DNS service feature that provides BIG-IP  system to move like a an authoritative dependent server. DNS Express resists on NOTIFY, AXFR, IXFR to transfer region data’s from main authorative server and saves them into the cache. DNS Express doen’t offer DNS log management feature.
  • Response Policy Zones(RPZ) ; Allow BIG-IP system to filter DNS requests that resists on asked source name when it is configurated with DNS cache. This can be used to prevent customers to access into the known malware sites.

BIG-IP DNS Services Fundamentals

BIG-IP DNS is a module that is used for watching usability of global sources and performances, and use these information for managing network traffic models.

You can make these things with BIG-IP DNS module:

  • Steer users into the local servers with using GeolP database for sites that are distributed as global.
  • Change load balancing configuration according to current traffic tools and time of the day.
  • Establish a global load balancing between different BIG-IP LTM systems and other computers
  • Watch the real-time network requirements
  • Integrate content distribution network from CDN provider

You should understand basic functions and terminology for applying BIG-IP DNS at above:

  • Configuration synchronization provides rapid distribution of BIG-IP DNS adjustments between  BIG-IP DNS systems in a synchronization group.
  • Load balancing divides works between resources; so, more work can be done in same time and fastest service is generally provided for all users. BIG-IP DNS selects best current resource with using static or dynamic load balancing method. When static load balancing method is used, BIG-IP DNS selects a resource that resists on a predefined pattern. When dynamic load balancing method is used, BIG-IP DNS selects a resource that resists on a basis of current performance metrics.
  • Prober pool is a regular aggregation of one or more BIG-IP system for using to watch certain resources.
  • Wide IP is a mapping of virtual server groups which includes content like one website, one e-commerce website, CDN (Content Distribution Network) and FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name).
  • iQuery is a XML protocol that used by BIG-IP DNS to communicate with other BIG-IP systems
  • BIG-IP DNS listener is a special virtual server that provides DNS services
  • Probe is an action that BIG-IP system used it for data aggregation from other network resources. BIG-IP DNS uses probes for watching health and usability of network resources.
  • Data center is a place that BIG-IP DNS consolidates metric datas and all ways that aggregated from connections, servers and virtual servers.
  • Virtual server is a combination of IP address and port number that points out to the resource which provides access to the application at network or data resource
  • Link is a logical simulation of physical device’s (router) that network connects into the Internet.
  • Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC)  is an industry standart protocol for providing integrity of DNS datas.
